Abstract
The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into educational assessment has significantly transformed the process of evaluating students’ writing skills. AI-based writing assessment systems provide automatic scoring, personalized feedback, and efficient evaluation procedures that improve the quality of writing instruction. This article discusses the major opportunities and challenges of AI-based writing assessment in English language education. The study highlights the advantages of AI such as objectivity, efficiency, consistency, personalization, and rapid feedback. At the same time, it examines challenges including validity and reliability concerns, algorithmic bias, data privacy, technological dependence, and ethical issues. The article concludes that AI should be used as a supportive educational tool rather than a replacement for human teachers and evaluators.
