Abstract

This article explores the development of reading skills and their significance in academic achievement and everyday life. It examines reading as a complex cognitive process that involves multiple components, including word recognition, vocabulary knowledge, reading fluency, comprehension, and critical thinking. The study also analyzes different types of reading such as skimming, scanning, intensive reading, and extensive reading, highlighting their specific functions in language learning and information processing. Furthermore, the article investigates key factors influencing reading development, including motivation, interest, vocabulary knowledge, and learning environment. It emphasizes that these factors play a crucial role in shaping learners’ reading competence and overall literacy development. In addition, the research discusses effective strategies for improving reading skills, such as active reading techniques, the use of context clues, and note-taking and summarizing methods.

The study also focuses on the role of modern technologies in reading development, including digital libraries, e-books, educational applications, and artificial intelligence tools. At the same time, it identifies several challenges such as digital distractions, limited reading habits, and language barriers that may hinder reading progress. Overall, the article provides a comprehensive overview of theoretical and practical aspects of reading skill development and offers recommendations for both learners and educators to enhance reading proficiency in contemporary educational contexts.
